Make sure your backup software allows for7 day, weekly, monthly, quarterly and up to 10 year retention of your data in case you get a virus, corruption or someone deletes an important record.
Your backups must perform
Make sure your backup software creates a local backup, offline backup and an offsite backup.
- Offline means the backup takes place on your computer even if the internet is offline
- Local means the backup take place on a separate local drive
- Offsite means your data is being stored at another location.
Ask for proof of encryption
Ask for proof of encryption and check the logs to make sure it is actually backing up.
Restore a file
Make sure you restore a file or record to prove it is actually backing up.
Communication is key!
Make sure your backup company communicates via email or a phone call any issues that may occur from time to time that would compromise your data.

Make sure your IT company is backing up to a Class A independent secure facility and not to your home or their office. This only leads to your data being compromised or even worse lost. In most cases they are just keeping your data on their servers and have little or no security in place.
